Regional statistics (as shown in the table below) sourced from Nomis, (March 2019) highlight the sector, “Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing” employs a total of 257,000 people in England and regional totals outside of London are as follows:

West Midlands – 40,000
East Midlands – 19,000
The East – 41,000

South East – 39,000
South West – 39,000

Focusing on production horticulture specifically, the industry employs approximately 82,000 people. There are nearly 8,000 horticulture businesses within the UK, the majority based in England, particularly in the East and South West and South East of England.
